Statement in Reaction to US Sanctions on RSF Commanders

In response to US sanctions on three RSF commanders, The Sentry’s Executive Director, Justyna Gudzowska, said:

“With a UN fact-finding mission now pointing to genocide in El Fasher, the US government has sanctioned three RSF commanders for their roles in executions, ethnic killings, sexual violence, and deliberate starvation. It’s encouraging to see the US, UK, and EU aligned in targeting the same officials, an important step toward showing that these crimes will not go unanswered.

But this is nowhere near enough. Sanctioning individual commanders is necessary, but far more is needed to impose real financial consequences on the RSF and on the networks that sustain it, including its backers in Abu Dhabi. Without broader economic pressure and accountability, these measures risk being symbolic rather than transformative.”
