Position: Investigator or Senior Investigator, Illegal Logging

The Sentry seeks a highly motivated and hard-working individual to join the organization as Investigator or Senior Investigator, Illegal Logging. They will have a lead role in designing and implementing a new thematic program on illegal logging which intends to disrupt and hold accountable transnational predatory networks that finance conflict, fund kleptocracies, and destroy the environment. This includes investigations that tell compelling stories, identify perpetrators, reveal systemic challenges, provide scope for policy action, and advance The Sentry’s strategic objectives.
Responsibilities
-In coordination with the Policy Advisor/Senior Policy Advisor, Illegal Logging, design a multi-year Program Strategy which outlines thematic and/or country-specific lines of investigation and policy work.
-Using a range of open source and field-based approaches to research and investigation, identify and document cases of illegal logging, particularly those at the intersection of conflict, corruption, and deforestation.
-Write investigative reports and alerts; compile confidential information packages and dossiers on subjects of investigation; and contribute to op-eds and other types of publications as may be needed.
-Manage the Illegal Logging program, including preparing budgets, donor reporting, and potentially supervising junior staff.
-Assess and manage digital and physical security risks for team members, intermediaries, and sources.
-Identify, evaluate, and report any ethical issues in the investigation and publication process.
-Engage with policymakers, governmental and intergovernmental authorities, and media as may be appropriate.
Qualifications
-Minimum 6-10 years of experience, including at least 3-5 years related to investigating illegal logging or other environmental crimes, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa and/or SE Asia.
-BA degree required, MA or other graduate degree preferred; ideally in environmental studies or possibly another relevant discipline such as journalism, law, public policy, or area studies.
-Strong research and investigative capabilities, including development of sources, OSINT, analysis of complex datasets, familiarity with financial records, and use of satellite imagery.
-Strong knowledge of the timber trade, forestry regulations, and applicable international, regional, and national environmental legal frameworks.
-Familiarity with targeted network sanctions and anti-money laundering mechanisms.
-Commitment to accountability for human rights violations and environmental crimes.
-Excellent writing and communication skills.
-Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
-English fluency required; French proficiency preferred. Other languages relevant for potential case studies would be a plus.
Compensation
Salary: $100,000-120,000 per year.
