Switzerland Sanctions Myanmar’s National Oil and Gas Company

BREAKING:
Switzerland Sanctions Myanmar’s National Oil and Gas Company

March 11, 2025 (London and Washington DC) – Today, Switzerland imposed sanctions on Myanmar’s national oil and gas company, Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE). Experts at The Sentry are available for interview and analysis.

Oliver Windridge, Director of Illicit Finance Policy at The Sentry, said: “Switzerland’s actions today should be welcomed, as it shuts down another source of finance for the junta. The oil and gas industry is the junta’s biggest source of foreign currency revenue, money that is used to purchase arms and other supplies to perpetrate atrocities against the Myanmar people. Switzerland’s actions today demonstrate the continued need for the international community to target the junta’s finances and maintain pressure on the regime wherever possible.”

Switzerland’s action today implements international sanctions imposed by the EU, United Nations and Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) through the Embargo Act.

The Swiss sanctions on MOGE close a loophole that Myanmar’s ruling junta could exploit to generate funds from the oil and gas sector, which finance the junta’s brutal campaign of terror against the Myanmar people.

About The Sentry

(Short descriptor for press use: “The Sentry, an investigative organization that tracks corruption.”)
The Sentry is an investigative and policy organization that seeks to disable multinational predatory networks that benefit from violent conflict, repression, and kleptocracy. Pull back the curtain on wars, mass atrocities, and other human rights abuses, and you’ll find grand corruption and unchecked greed. These tragedies persist because the perpetrators rarely face meaningful consequences. The Sentry aims to alter the warped incentive structures that continually undermine peace and good governance. Our investigations follow the money as it is laundered from war zones to financial centers around the world. We provide evidence and strategies for governments, banks, and law enforcement to hold the perpetrators and enablers of violence and corruption to account. These efforts provide new leverage for human rights, peace, and anti-corruption efforts. Learn more at: https://TheSentry.org
