Statement on President Salva Kiir’s dissolution of South Sudan’s transitional government

In response to President Salva Kiir’s dissolution of South Sudan’s transitional government, Brian Adeba, Senior Policy Advisor at The Sentry, issued the following statement:

“President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional government tonight, ostensibly to prepare for December elections. This is being presented as adherence to the 2018 peace agreement. It is not. The agreement committed all signatories to power-sharing and urgent reforms to dismantle South Sudan’s kleptocratic governance system. Instead, Kiir acted unilaterally, without the consent of the other signatories to the peace agreement.

Worse, the prerequisites for credible elections are missing: no census, no permanent constitution, no voter register, and no independent elections commission. Holding elections under these conditions risks turning a promised democratic transition into another source of instability and conflict, trapping South Sudan in a cycle of endless strife.”
